The short answer

As of 2026-10-15, the news around THE DEAD WE KNEW: Open World Survival is that it is close to launch: the official Steam page lists a release date of Oct 22, 2026, and the launch is an Early Access release rather than a finished 1.0. MAY19 STUDIO is both the developer and the publisher. The same store page carries a news post dated Oct 13, 2026 confirming the October 22 date, and an earlier post dated Oct 9, 2026 announcing that the game passed 250,000 wishlists.

Watch out for the older September date

If you have seen a September 17, 2026 release date quoted, that comes from an earlier community preview rather than the store listing. The XGW Gaming video — which says the developers supplied trailer and gameplay footage directly to the channel — reported the game as "scheduled to launch on PC through Steam on September 17th, 2026." The Steam page's own listed date is Oct 22, 2026, so treat the September figure as an outdated report and the store date as the one to plan around. As of 2026-10-15, the official Steam page does not list a price.

What the game actually is

The Steam description frames it as an open-world survival game where you loot abandoned structures, build and upgrade a shelter from a simple cabin into a larger base, and manage hunger, thirst and energy. Its feature list includes Single-player, Online Co-op and Family Sharing, and the store tags lean heavily on open world, survival, zombies, base building, crafting and third-person shooting.

Community previews fill in more texture, and they broadly agree with the store page:

  • The XGW Gaming preview highlights dynamic weather, a fog system, hostile human survivors as a second threat alongside zombies, and co-op for up to four players — a player-count figure that comes from the video, not from a number stated on the Steam page.
  • The Zaravio Gaming preview describes exploring a large open world, looting abandoned buildings, hunting animals, cooking, growing crops, and a realistic art style with rain and heavy fog. That video also titles the game slightly differently in places, so a stray "The Day We Knew" in a search result is usually just a transcription slip for the same game.

On the official side, MAY19 STUDIO's Early Access notes describe the loop as already functional: fighting zombies and hostile survivors, gathering resources, crafting equipment, building and defending shelters, and managing hunger, thirst and energy. The store page also mentions a dynamic day and night cycle, changing weather including wind and rain, swimming, and boats used to cross water and reach other parts of the map.

The Early Access plan

The developer's answers on the Steam page give a reasonably clear picture of what launch means:

  • Early Access is expected to last approximately one year, explicitly described as not a fixed deadline.
  • The price is planned to increase gradually during Early Access as content is added, with changes communicated in advance.
  • Planned additions include new weapon types and expanded combat, more sea-related activities such as fishing on top of the existing swimming and boat systems, vehicles, new settlements and locations, and ongoing optimisation based on player feedback.

PC requirements

The Steam page lists Windows only:

  • Minimum: Windows 10, 12 GB RAM, NVIDIA GTX 1070 or equivalent, DirectX 11, 20 GB available storage.
  • Recommended: Windows 11, 24 GB RAM, NVIDIA RTX 2080 or equivalent, DirectX 11, 20 GB available storage.

Those are relatively heavy for the genre, and the Zaravio Gaming preview makes the same point, suggesting that players on lower-end hardware may want to wait for post-launch performance tests before buying. That is a reasonable caution rather than a tested result — nobody has had the final build in hand long enough to say how it runs.

Platforms and open questions

As of 2026-10-15, the official Steam page's system requirements section lists Windows only, and MAY19 STUDIO has not announced PlayStation, Xbox or Switch versions on that page as of 2026-10-15. Steam Deck compatibility is listed as Unknown on the store page. The page also shows no user reviews as of 2026-10-15, which is expected for a game that has not unlocked.

If you want to keep up

Wishlisting or following the game on Steam is the practical way to get a notification when it unlocks, and the store page's events section is where MAY19 STUDIO posts announcements like the wishlist milestone and the release date confirmation. For hands-on impressions before release, the two community previews linked above are the most substantive video coverage currently circulating.
