There is no beta for The Dead We Knew that you can sign up for. As of 2026-10-15, the game's official Steam page lists a planned release date of October 22, 2026 under a "Coming Soon To Early Access" banner, and the page does not list a beta, a playtest sign-up, or a separate test client. When people talk about "the beta," they are almost always describing that Early Access launch, which is the first build the public will be able to play.

What Early Access is standing in for

MAY19 STUDIO develops and publishes the game itself, and its own Early Access note on the Steam page describes the launch build as fully playable: open-world exploration, combat against zombies and hostile survivors, resource gathering, crafting, base building and defense, and survival needs like hunger, thirst, and energy. Swimming and boats are in as well, for crossing water to reach other parts of the map.

The Steam page's feature list includes single-player and online co-op, and its tags include PvE. A YouTube preview, "It Looks Good But Is Real ? The Dead We Knew," put co-op at up to four players — that figure comes from the video rather than from wording the store page spells out.

The world runs a 24-hour day/night cycle with shifting wind, sudden rain, and dense fog. Fog is presented as more than weather: reduced visibility is tied to zombies becoming more aggressive and attacking out of the dark.

What the developers say about testing and feedback

The Early Access FAQ on the Steam page answers the questions a beta signup page normally would:

  • Duration: the plan is roughly one year in Early Access, described as not a fixed deadline.
  • Price: the studio plans to raise the price gradually as content is added, with changes communicated in advance.
  • Feedback: the discussion boards and community reports are the stated channel for shaping fixes, balance, and priorities.
  • Planned additions: new weapon types and expanded combat, fishing and more sea activities built on the existing swimming and boat systems, vehicles as a new transport option, and new settlements and locations to explore.

Why the word "beta" keeps coming up

The main reason is release-date churn rather than an actual test program. Inven Global reported on July 17, 2026 that May19 Studio had announced a Steam release "this August." The YouTube preview above, published before the current date was set, went with August 24, 2026 — the creator's own reading of the schedule, not an official date. The Instant Gaming store page lists 21 October 2026 for PC (Steam), which lines up with the Steam date once time zones are accounted for. All of these are different dates attached to the same Early Access launch, not beta phases.

Player skepticism worth knowing about

The same YouTube preview is a useful read on how the game was being received before launch. The creator called the trailer promising but openly wondered whether this was a Dead Matter or The Day Before situation — a good-looking trailer with little public activity behind it. He noted that the studio's social accounts had very small followings, that the Discord invite had only recently started working, that there were no developer letters at that point, and that the Steam page was effectively the only source of news. He also suggested VEIN as something to play in the meantime, and flagged that the build/cooking/stamina side of survival had not been shown in trailers.

That is one creator's view from before release and should be read as commentary, not confirmed fact. Since then, the studio has posted Steam announcements about passing 250,000 wishlists and confirming the October 22 date, so the "no communication" concern is at least partly outdated.

Practical notes if you want in early

  • Follow or wishlist on Steam. That is the reliable way to get notified when the Early Access build unlocks; the Steam page showed it planned to unlock in approximately seven days as of 2026-10-15.
  • Be wary of "beta key" offers. The developers have not announced a closed beta, key giveaway, or playtest signup as of 2026-10-15, so anyone selling or trading access to one is offering something that has not been announced. Treat those offers as unverified.
  • Early Access purchase is the confirmed route. Buying in when the Early Access build goes live is the only announced way to play before the full release.
  • Hardware check: the Steam page lists Windows 10 with 12 GB RAM and a GTX 1070 as minimum, Windows 11 with 24 GB RAM and an RTX 2080 as recommended, and Steam Deck compatibility as Unknown. The page's requirements cover Windows only, and the page does not list console versions as of 2026-10-15.
