The Dead We Knew Zombies: Fog Behavior and Threats
What the Steam page and a pre-release player breakdown say about zombies in The Dead We Knew, including the fog frenzy behavior.

Table of Contents
In The Dead We Knew: Open World Survival, zombies are the baseline enemy you fight from your first hour, but the thing that actually changes how dangerous they are is weather. The official Steam page describes a world where you survive alone or in co-op "against zombies, hostile humans, and the growing dangers that come with the fog," and it states plainly that when visibility drops, zombies can become more aggressive and attack from within the darkness and fog. A widely shared pre-release player breakdown goes further and treats fog as a difficulty switch rather than a visual filter: visibility collapses, and the zombies get faster and start roaming and ambushing.
One important framing note: as of 2026-10-15, the official Steam page lists a planned Early Access release on Oct 22, 2026. Nothing below comes from a public build you can play today — it comes from the store description and from players analysing pre-release footage, so treat specific numbers as impressions rather than tested behaviour.
What the game itself says about zombies
The official Steam page keeps zombies in the same sentence as everything else that wants you dead. It lists the core loop as exploring a dangerous open world, looting abandoned places, building a shelter, producing food, and managing resources, with zombies and hostile humans as the two named threats. The mature content description mentions "combat with zombies and hostile human groups," and the store tags include Zombies, PvE, and Third-Person Shooter.
The same page also frames fog as more than scenery: dense fog can "completely destroy your visibility," and the description calls it "a warning sign of one of the greatest dangers." That is the single most useful zombie-related fact on the store page — the fog is not just an ambience layer, it is tied to how the zombies behave.
As of 2026-10-15, the official Steam page does not break zombies into named types or describe distinct variants, so any talk of "frenzied" versus ordinary zombies comes from player interpretation rather than a published enemy list.

Fog is the zombie mechanic to plan around
The clearest player-side explanation comes from the YouTube breakdown The Dead We Knew: Fog Turns Zombies INSANE! With ENEMY AI Humans!. In that video's account, fog is a rules change: visibility drops to just a few metres, you cannot spot hordes in advance, and zombies enter a frenzied state where they move faster, become far more aggressive, and actively roam and ambush inside the fog. The same account contrasts clear days, when scavenging feels safe, with fog, when leaving your base becomes a real gamble.
That "few metres" figure is the creator's estimate from footage, not a measured in-game number, and it will likely shift once players can test the released build. The direction of the claim, though, lines up with the store page's own wording about zombies attacking "from within the darkness and fog" when visibility drops.
Zombies are not the only thing hunting you
Both the store page and player coverage stress that zombies share the map with AI-controlled human survivors. Inven Global's July 2026 write-up on the game is even headlined around humans being more dangerous than zombies, and notes that survivors you meet could become allies or turn into enemies depending on how scarce resources get.
The YouTube breakdown describes those AI bandits as a third path between pure zombie PvE and real-player PvP: they scavenge, explore, follow the noise of your gunfire and building, use cover, flank defences, raid bases, and retreat when a fight turns against them — explicitly not mindlessly rushing walls the way zombies do. That distinction matters for base design, since walls and traps built to stop a zombie push may not be what stops a survivor raid. See our human enemies guide for that side of the threat.

Preparing for zombie pressure
These are conditional suggestions based on how the game is described, not confirmed build behaviour:
- If the released build matches the store description, treat fog rolling in as a signal to be inside or close to shelter rather than starting a long scavenging run.
- Plan a short retreat route from any loot run, since the danger with fog is reduced warning time rather than a single tougher enemy.
- Build with layered defences — the player account above suggests you will face slow zombie pressure and smarter human raids, which reward different layouts.
- Stockpile before you need it. The same account argues that surviving a fog night plus a raid is mostly about what you prepared earlier.
Where these impressions come from, and what may change
The game was in Early Access pre-release at the time of writing, and the developer's own Steam notes say the plan is roughly a year in Early Access with new weapons, vehicles, fishing, and new settlements to follow. Zombie behaviour is exactly the kind of system that tends to get tuned during that period.
Two date discrepancies are worth knowing if you are following older coverage: the YouTube breakdown references a September 17 launch, and Inven Global's article from 2026-07-17 reported an August release window — neither matches the Oct 22, 2026 date the official Steam page lists as of 2026-10-15. Read the older videos for mechanics, not for scheduling.
