The Dead We Knew gameplay overview

The Dead We Knew is planned as an open-world survival game focused on exploration, scavenging, crafting, shelter construction, combat, and survival management. You search abandoned locations for supplies, gather resources, make equipment and food, build a base, and prepare for threats from zombies, hostile humans, weather, and limited visibility.

As of 2026-10-15, the official Steam page lists the game as coming to Steam Early Access on October 22, 2026. The game is not yet available on Steam according to that page, so the details below describe the announced gameplay loop and preview footage rather than a complete hands-on guide.

Main gameplay loop

A typical expedition is expected to involve:

  1. Leaving your shelter to explore the open world.
  2. Searching abandoned buildings and natural areas for useful supplies.
  3. Gathering materials for crafting, construction, and food.
  4. Avoiding or fighting zombies and hostile survivors.
  5. Returning to your shelter to organize supplies, prepare food, and improve the base.
  6. Preparing for the next trip with better equipment and stronger defenses.

The Steam listing describes single-player and online co-op. In multiplayer, players are expected to explore, build, and survive together rather than treating the game as a purely combat-focused shooter.

Survival systems

Food, hunger, thirst, and energy are listed as part of the survival experience. Food can come from scavenged supplies and natural resources. The announced systems include hunting animals, processing meat, cooking it over a fire, growing vegetables such as tomatoes, and preparing more substantial meals.

This makes preparation important. A sensible approach will be to gather food and basic materials before traveling far from shelter, keep supplies organized, and avoid treating every encounter as a fight. These are practical survival priorities based on the announced systems, not confirmed control or inventory instructions.

Exploration, combat, and the environment

The world contains abandoned structures, forests, settlements, and other areas to investigate. Zombies are not the only danger: hostile human groups can also make apparently useful locations unsafe.

The game features a day-and-night cycle, changing weather, wind, rain, and fog. Fog reduces visibility and can make zombies more aggressive, so an area that seems manageable in clear daylight may become much more dangerous when conditions change. Players should expect visibility and weather to affect route planning, combat decisions, and the timing of expeditions.

The announced water systems include swimming and boats for reaching different areas. Fishing and vehicles are described as planned additions during Early Access, so they should not be assumed in every Early Access build.

Base building and progression

Shelter construction is a central part of the game. The announced progression begins with a simple cabin that can be expanded into a stronger and more livable base. Players can build defenses, create places to rest, organize supplies, craft equipment, prepare food, and improve the shelter over time.

The base is therefore more than a cosmetic building project: it is intended to support storage, recovery, crafting, food preparation, and defense. Reinforcing it before dangerous trips should be useful, especially when nighttime, fog, or hostile survivors increase the risks outside.

Early Access limitations

The Steam page identifies the game as Early Access and says that the developers plan to expand the world, refine existing systems, add content, and optimize performance through community feedback. Mechanics, balance, performance, and the exact content available at launch may change between Early Access builds and the full release.

The same page lists Windows 10, 12 GB of RAM, and a GTX 1070 or equivalent as minimum PC requirements, with Windows 11, 24 GB of RAM, and an RTX 2080 or equivalent recommended. Players with lower-end hardware should wait for post-release performance reports before assuming that preview footage represents their own experience.
