The Dead We Knew First Person: What We Know

Is The Dead We Knew first person? The Steam page's tags point to third-person shooter, and no first-person camera is described there as of 2026-10-15.

Short answer: nothing published about THE DEAD WE KNEW: Open World Survival describes a first-person mode or a camera toggle. As of 2026-10-15, the official Steam page does not mention a first-person view, while the popular user-defined tags on that same page include "Third-Person Shooter" and "Third Person." Those tags are applied by players rather than written by the developer, so treat them as a strong hint rather than a spec sheet — but they line up with everything else out there.

The other half of the answer is timing: the game is not out yet. As of 2026-10-15, the official Steam page shows a planned release date of Oct 22, 2026, in Early Access. So nobody is answering this from a retail build — every impression so far comes from trailers, screenshots, and developer descriptions.

What the official Steam page does and does not say

The official Steam page lists MAY19 STUDIO as both developer and publisher, marks the game as coming soon to Early Access, and lists Single-player, Online Co-op, and Family Sharing as features. The "About This Game" text covers shelter building, a 24-hour day/night cycle, wind and rain, dense fog that cuts visibility, hunting deer, farming vegetables, and cooking — none of which touches camera perspective.

The perspective signal comes from the tag list, where "Third-Person Shooter" and "Third Person" sit alongside the genre line of Action, Adventure, RPG, Simulation, and Early Access. The accessibility features the page does list are adjustable difficulty, contrast controls, custom volume controls, stereo sound, playable without quick time events, and playable at your own pace — no camera or view option among them.

What the community footage covers

XGW Gaming's video breakdown, which says the developers supplied it with official trailer and gameplay footage, runs through open-world exploration, resource management, shelter building, weapons, hostile human survivors, the fog system, and co-op — and never discusses camera perspective at all. It reports single-player plus online co-op for up to four players, and gives a September 17, 2026 release date, which the official Steam page has since moved to Oct 22, 2026. It is a useful features overview; it is not evidence for or against a first-person view either way.

The same is true of the earlier feature write-up from Inven Global (July 17, 2026), which describes scavenging, base building, hunger, thirst, stamina, health, climate changes, fog, and hostile survivors without mentioning how the camera sits.

The Early Access roadmap does not mention a camera option

The Steam page's Early Access section lists what the studio plans to add: new weapon types and expanded combat, more sea interactions such as fishing, vehicles, new settlements and locations, and optimization and refinement. As of 2026-10-15, that list does not include a first-person camera or a perspective toggle. The developers describe Early Access as roughly a one-year period of expanding existing systems rather than rebuilding the foundation, so a perspective option is not something the page rules out for the full release — it is simply not something any page or announcement describes as of 2026-10-15.

If first-person matters to you

A few conditional suggestions, none of which are tested game features:

  • Wishlist the game on Steam and revisit the store page after Oct 22, 2026. A camera or perspective setting would surface first in launch-week patch notes or store-page updates.
  • The Steam discussion boards are the channel the developers point players to for feedback and bug reports, and they say player feedback will shape what gets prioritized during Early Access. Asking there is a reasonable way to get an answer once people are actually playing.
  • If you are deciding whether to buy at launch, weigh the Early Access terms on the store page: the studio plans to raise the price as content is added, and the page notes that Early Access games are not complete and may change.
