The Dead We Knew does not have confirmed player-versus-player (PvP) support in the available pre-release information. The official Steam page lists single-player and online co-op, while its multiplayer tags include PvE rather than a confirmed PvP mode: THE DEAD WE KNEW: Open World Survival on Steam.

What multiplayer is confirmed?

The game is presented primarily as a survival experience against environmental dangers, zombies, and hostile human survivors. The Steam listing describes online co-op, and a gameplay overview from XGW Gaming reports co-op for up to four players. That points to a cooperative PvE structure in which players explore, gather supplies, build shelters, and defend themselves together.

The official Steam page does not describe PvP rules, player damage, competitive modes, PvP servers, matchmaking, or a player-versus-player toggle as of 2026-10-15. This does not rule out a later announcement, especially because the game is planned for Early Access and its systems may change during development.

Are hostile survivors other players?

Probably not, based on the material shown so far. An Inven Global feature describes hostile survivors as human threats who may become allies or enemies, but it does not identify them as player-controlled characters. A gameplay commentary by Wide Gaming likewise says the human enemies seen in the trailers appear to be AI and notes that no PvP elements had been indicated.

For now, treat “hostile survivors” as an enemy faction or NPC threat rather than evidence of PvP. They may make scavenging and exploration more dangerous, but the available descriptions do not confirm that another human player controls them.

What to expect when playing with friends

If you are interested in multiplayer, the supported concept appears to be cooperative survival:

  • Explore abandoned areas and search for supplies.
  • Build and improve a shared shelter.
  • Craft equipment and manage food, hunger, thirst, health, and energy.
  • Fight zombies and hostile human groups.
  • Coordinate during changing weather and dense fog, when visibility falls and zombies may become more aggressive.
  • Travel and survive together in online co-op, reported as supporting up to four players.

These activities should not be confused with a confirmed PvP mode. The available descriptions do not establish whether players can damage one another, raid another group’s base, steal resources from other players, or use a separate competitive server.

Should you buy it for PvP?

Do not choose The Dead We Knew expecting an established PvP survival game. As of 2026-10-15, the official Steam page presents it as a single-player and online co-op survival game and does not list PvP features. Players specifically looking for raids, faction warfare, or competitive servers should wait for a developer announcement or an Early Access update that clearly explains those systems.

If PvP is added later, its rules may depend on the Early Access build. Check the official Steam announcements and the in-game multiplayer description after release before assuming that friendly fire, player damage, or competitive progression is available.
